Tchaikovsky had originally dedicated his violin concerto to violinist and teacher Leopold Auer. After Auer criticized the piece and suggested substantial changes, Tchaikovsky rededicated it to violinist Adolph Davidovich Brodsky. Auer, nonetheless, produced the piece with his preferred, fairly significant changes and cuts. Auer, on one hand, removed some double-stops making a section building up to the great climactic orchestral entrance easier, while adding 10ths at a slightly later section. In the third movement, he produced many cuts that shorten the piece (and are often liked by performers) and included an arpeggiation where Tchaikovsky originally had a 4-note passage repeating itself. For the third movement, both, the uncut/original and Auer's versions are available. This concerto was partly inspired by Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole.
