The Elegie, or 'Elegie pour alto' in F minor op. 30 was written for viola and piano accompaniment in 1854, but Vieuxtemps transcribed it for violin and cello as well. Although the opening melody and mood are slow and tense, the piece is quite virtuosic and dramatic.
