'After a Dream' belongs to Faure's '3 songs' or 'Trois melodies' op. 7, dedicated to Madame Marguerite Baugnies (Marguerite of Saint-Marceaux). The song became popularized for stringed instruments by masters like cellist Pablo Casals and violinist Mischa Elman in the 20th century.

It is based on a French poem by Romain Bussine, one of the artists who'd founded the Société Nationale de Musique with Camille Saint-Saens.
